moorbarrioGwynne Hogan takes us through Moor Barrios and last week's Winemaker's Night at The Vines...

A few decades from now, the young owners of tiny and new winery Moor Barrios, will hopefully be sitting on the veranda of their rustic country home, sipping a glass of their homemade Malbec, and laughing as they recount the story of their first harvest to their grandchildren. But until then, they surely have a lot of scrambling left to do.

This past Wednesday at The Vine's Winemaker’s Night, Cristian Moor and Teresita Barrio, a husband and wife duo of winemakers, presented their first harvest and told us some of the horror stories that come with being a tiny producer. What do you do when the de-stemmer you rented breaks? The only thing you can do if you don’t want your grapes to spoil while awaiting the repairman—pluck out the stems yourself! Moor and Barrio and a few of their most docile friends manually de-stemmed malbec for over ten hours straight while they got their mechanical problems sorted out.

Hearing an origin story like this, makes you yearn for this young couple’s success, and after trying their Malbec and their sparkling, one becomes even more hopeful. Their Initium Malbec Roble 2011 shows delicate fruit and vanilla in the nose and is refreshing with sour plum on the palate. Initium Extra Brut 2011 is a Chardonnay based bubbly with light fizz and toasty banana and almond aromas.

The Vines Winemaker's Night is held every Wednesday evening in The Vines, Espejo 567, and costs $40 pesos. Call for reservations: 438 8327.
