Mendoza City

Flora
Ladies and Gentleman, Flora has expanded
to Mendoza Center. Originally in Chacras, this
culinary fusion of Argentinean and European
cuisine has now reopened in Mendoza city
center. The décor of beautiful carved wood
and high ceilings makes Flora the perfect
backdrop to any special evening. Upon
visiting, the wait staff went above and beyond
normal service standards and patiently
accommodated the indecisive nature of my
group. On beautifully set tables, our salads
were served fresh alongside homemade
breads and delectable spreads. You’ll have
trouble choosing between the gourmet
entrées such as glazed chicken, rack of lamb,
sandwiches, and grilled fish in paper; all fit
to be paired with a wine from their extensive
wine list. For dessert I recommend the tasting

platter, with a sweet bite or two of all they
offer. Come hungry because this is the type
of place you want to partake in all the courses.

Praga

Praga specialises in seafood and is undoubtedly the best restaurant in town if it is mariscos you are after.  Dishes such as shrimp chop suey, sea urchin or Spanish octupus are done with flair and a great antidote for any of us that miss the sea. The restaurant itself is very charming and romantic, set in front of a pretty plazoleta in the upscale 5th section, three blocks from Belgrano.  Inside there is an atmospheric courtyard surrounded by a wooden timberframe. The delightful, Botero-style paintings that hang on the pale yellow walls are done by the owners wife and available to buy.  The wine list is spectacular and the bottles stored in an air-conditioned side room.  Try the Mendel Malbec 2004, a small boutique winery in Lujan de Cuyo. Average price for a meal without wine $40 AR
Leonidas Aguirre 413 (on the corner of Avellaneda and Olascoaga), Tel 4259585, open everyday from 8pm.

El Palenque

This laidback, casual style restaurant on Aristides Villanueva is phenomenally popular and always the first to fill up with a healthy mixture of locals and foreigners.  Its bustling nature is matched with a menu packed with the usual Argentine fare of pizzas and empanadas and what must be the most delicious French fries in Mendoza. Average cost without wine $30 AR.
Aristides Villanueva 287, tel. 154548023

La Chancha

La Chancha is a popular spot with the locals, and not surprisingly since its cosy interior and inviting courtyard ensure that it’s easy to while away the night over a few glasses of local wine in these relaxing surrounds. Live bands regularly play “rock national”, a favourite of Argentinean youth with its mix of Latin rhythms and popular themes.
Check listings. Music starts at about 10pm. Wines from around $13AR and good, reasonably priced meals are also available.
