Who to blame for your hangover

E-mail Print PDF

wine_swirlFeeling unexpectedly queasy after a night imbibing wine? Need someone to blame besides yourself?

The Canadian wine board has recently confirmed what I suspected for years: that certain wines pack more of a punch than they care to admit and many wineries consistently understate the alcohol levels of their wine with wineries from Chile and Argentina the worst offenders.

What it states on the label is not necessarily the truth and Canadians being Canadians actually test the plonk to see is it correct. 129,000 wines were tested over a 16 year period and the results showed a consistent pattern to mark downwards between .5 and 1% the alcohol level, primarily for marketing reasons.

Another curious result from the study is that while the consumer wants lighter wines, the wine industry is actually producing stronger wines with the average alcohol content up by 1%. Who said no good would come out of gobal warming?
